Signal Warrant Results for an Intersection

This documentation shows users how to view detailed results for a specific intersection, including traffic volumes, justification breakdowns, predictive trends, and supporting visualizations such as maps and graphs.

1. Select an Intersection

To view detailed results of a specific intersection, click on the row of the intersection you want to access in the results table. This action will open a detailed view of the selected intersection

2. Details

  • Interval:

    • Latest Study : the most recent year of data you imported

    • Current Year : all volumes standardized to the present

    • Prediction : the first future year it becomes warranted, if applicable

  • Summary: Displays how close the intersection is to meeting various justifications

  • Year: Year of each interval

  • Is Justified: Checkbox indicating whether the intersection meets the warrant at that year.

3. Details: Graph 1

  1. Total Volume Over Time

    • A line chart illustrating how overall traffic volume (all movements combined) is expected to increase from the latest study year through the prediction year.

    • This chart helps visualize the growth trend that leads to a future warrant.

4. Details: Graph 2

  1. Justification Percentage

    • A line chart showing each justification’s satisfaction percentage over time.

5. Details: Exporting Graphs

  • Each graph has a hamburger icon (a small menu button) in the upper-right corner.

  • Clicking this icon lets you export the chart in multiple formats (PNG, JPEG, PDF, or SVG).

6. Map

  • A GIS map centered on the selected intersection that is highlighted in blue.

  • Use the + and buttons on the map to change your view.

  • Click & Drag to pan around the map.

  • Along the top of the map, you’ll see icons for:

    • Google Map

    • Google Street View

    • Bing Map

    • Bing Street View

    • Open Location Details (within TES)

    • Click any of these icons to open a new browser tab or window showing the same location in the chosen map service.

7. Predicted Volume RawData: Graph

  • Bar chart that shows approach-specific volumes for various time intervals for the predicted year

  • Click on the hamburger icon to export graph as an image

8. Predicted Volume RawData: Table

  • Below the chart, you’ll find a pivot table that lists predicted volumes based on the order of the fields on top of the table

  • The sequence of Row Fields and Column Fields controls the “group by” order.

  • Just above the ordered fields is the Filter section, allowing you to filter out specific fields

9. Predicted Volume RawData: Field Chooser

  • Click on the Field Chooser icon located on the top right of the table

  • This icon opens a window that allows you to edit:

    • All Fields: Check or uncheck boxes to show/hide columns. You can also drag each field into the other sections

    • Row Fields : Determines how the data is grouped row-wise

    • Column Fields : Determines how the data is grouped column-wise

    • Data Fields : The numeric values you want to total or sum.

    • Filter Fields : Lets you apply filters to narrow down what appears in the table

10. Predicted Volume RawData: Export Table

  • Clicking this icon downloads the current table view as an Excel file.

  • If you’ve rearranged or filtered fields, your exported spreadsheet will reflect those changes.

11. Predicted Result Summary: Diagram

  • A layout of the intersection, showing each approach with arrows for different movements (e.g., left, through, right).

  • Associated to each arrow, you’ll see predicted traffic volumes for cars, trucks, cyclists, and pedestrians.

12. Predicted Result Summary: Line Chart

  • A time-series graph that plots the predicted volumes by hour (or other time increments).

  • Each colored line represents a vehicle or user type.

  • Select on a legend item to hide/show that data series.

  • Click on the hamburger icon to export graph as an image

13. Predicted Signal Warrants

  • The Predicted Signal Warrants tab evaluates whether a traffic signal is warranted at the given location based on various justifications. These criteria are based on the justifications outlined in Book 12 of the Ontario Traffic Manual.

  • At the top of the Signal Warrants tab, you can view:

    • Whether the study is justified.

    • The percentage of satisfaction for each justification.
